Q: I am from Boston, Massachusetts and read an article from you written quite a while ago about Icelandic genealogy. My great grandfather Gudmundur Hallsen (I believe born Guðmundur Guðmundsson) was born in Iceland on September 30, 1879.

I have been trying to get information on the Icelandic side for quite some time, and it’s very difficult! I got in touch with a man a while ago through email and he gave me a lot of good information which I am trying to confirm.

Could you give me some advice as to how to continue? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time.

Eric Hallsen, U.S.

A: It’s best to contact the Icelandic Emigration Center in Hofsós, North Iceland. They’ve helped people of Icelandic descent find information about their Icelandic ancestors and track down their relatives in Iceland.
