The Dalvík Search and Rescue team has received the Outstanding Tech for Safety Award from the European Emergency Number Association (EENA112), Vísir reports. Dalvík SAR received the honor for their effective use of a drone in the rescues of two hikers near Siglufjörður in 2016.
Haukur Arnar Gunnarsson, who is the head of the Dalvík SAR and who has been participating in search and rescue missions for 30 years, received the award on behalf of his team at a ceremony in Ljubljana, Slovenia. “Every year in Iceland there are approximately 60 to 80 similar operations,” he said in a video that drone manufacturer DJI produced about the rescue. “...I’m positive that drones will play a major role I the future of search and rescue.”
You can watch DJI’s video about the rescue, including interviews with the rescued hikers, Haukur, and EENA112’s Drones Activities Manager (with English subtitles) here.
