How do you catch a 37 kilogram cod? If you’re Akranes fisherman Guðmundur Elíasson, you do it with a simple handline. Guðmundur was fishing on Monday in Faxaflói bay, West Iceland, when he caught the cod.
“This is the biggest fish I have ever caught so I had a little trouble pulling it on board,” Guðmundur told Skessuhorn. “It was spawning and also full of capelin which has come into the bay recently.”
Handline fishing is one of the oldest fishing techniques and is still in use around the world today. Guðmundur says large fish have been plentiful in the bay following stormy weather in January and February and the method has served him well.
