Road around Reykjavík and in South Iceland are closed this morning due to a violent storm. RÚV reported first.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration warned of the road closures in advance yesterday. Wind speeds of 23-28 metres per second were forecast, with gusts of 35-40 m/s between Reykjavík and Keflavík airport and a blizzard in the Golden Circle area.
As of publication, Ring Road 1 remains closed north- and southbound out of Reykjavík, as does Road 36 to the Golden Circle. Road 41 between Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport was closed this morning, but has reopened.
The storm is expected to die down in Southwest Iceland before noon, heading northeast through the country. North Iceland can expect bad weather from the late morning into the afternoon.
